Leader of the Pack in 2017 Blockbusters in 2017: 1
Everyone feeling comfortable with the village idiot in charge of the world's largest weapons of mass destruction? Okay Distributors not feeling so comfortable this past weekend, all things must pass guys as George Harrison was won't to put in. Mindblowing got a $2.6 million result for ethnic orientated Dangal which will have smiles on some dials, nice to see support for this one from our Indian community, to be honest no one else cared. Putting my hand up, can't be bothered to check the imdb to find out what this one was about, but am pretty sure it wasn't mindblowing. Icon have had a rough couple of years, being overtaken by a number of Companies rising out of the third tier, but they did at least get some action on Hacksaw Ridge to the tune of $8.6 million. Fingers crossed they can build on that and have an outstanding 2017, haven't got much faith to be honest but prove me wrong guys. White guys can pick movies, uhmm yeah major demographics are waiting on your decisions. In comparison Roadshow stumbled about for nine weeks with the grossly over rated, looking at you Kermode, Arrival which managed about $8 million without really lifting off. The movie started well but got run down by some pretty negative reviews, too long and too much Oscar bait was my call, one of the more disappointing movies of 2016. Who would have thought a singing animated pig would have held down top spot on the chart for the first two weeks of the year! Sing may have fallen back -31% over weekend three but the $2.3 million earnt was enough to keep top spot and push the movie above blockbuster status. Clearly Universal are doing something right and keeping Disney at bay while doing so. However with school holidays running out some dramatic falls might be in order for the movie over the coming weeks. Wow a musical rom-com actually became a breakout hit for Entertainment One! La La Land has managed a $11.5 million result over three weeks, which is pretty much awesome, and keeps another third tier Distributor in the big league. Not much interest from the folks around here to be honest, but two thumbs up to Entertainment one for notching a hit. Disney's Moana was off -30% and finished the weekend under blockbuster status, but hey within shouting distance. The House of Mouse clearly expected this one to be there push to number one over the Xmas period, so bit of a wake up call there, though the movie is going to make a butt load of cash. What's Coming Up, if anything
