Australian Box Office - 5th January 2017
Leader of the Pack in 2017 Blockbusters in 2017: 0
After the full scale slaughter in the top twenty last week it was somewhat pleasing to get back to normal service this weekend. Office Christmas Party delivered Entertainment One $5.8 million, which is for sure disappointing given the whole scale push the Distributor had happening for the movie. For some reason a mix of Male and Female characters behaving badly didn't really gel with the local market, while Women behaving badly has been huge through last year. Entertainment One are clearly flexing their muscles and got to say they are making some waves. Fingers crossed for a good 2017 for the Distributor, now if they could send some horror our way. Universal stepped on a bit of a banana skin with Nocturnal Animals staggering to $2 million, there was some confusing as to whether or not this was a horror movie, unfortunately for Universal some horror sites were claiming it, hence the disenchantment amongst mainstream movie goers. Horror fans were well aware this was a psychological thriller and weren't overly interested, once again the internet claiming another victim; we'll have more on this subject later in the year. Kicking off 2017 in top spot is the animated pig movie Sing, which coincidentally knocked off Rogue One over the weekend. Sing is within a note of blockbuster status after a solid $5.6 million weekend. Okay the movie was off -30% over weekend two but guess we are going to see the sandpit crew heavily supporting a whole bunch of toons through January. This one should kick on to around $28 million, unless we get some bad weather and hence more punters in the cinema. Polynesian based animated flick Moana held down second spot on a -29% result delivering a $5 million result in the movie's sophmore session. The movie has pumped up the jam to $17.3 million and is our second feature headed toward blockbuster status in 2017. Good start to the cinema year with a lot more tent pole movies header our way through the course of the year, 2017 isn't going to let up folks. Opening in third spot Passengers kept the flag flying for SciFi, the movie burst out of the blocks with a $4.5 million bow, adding to the early release total gross of $9.3 million. The movie is getting some hate due to the content, talk about your male treatment of women, JLaw what were you thinking taking this role. Sill in the era of Trumptopia it's going to get pretty strange, we is all doomed I tells ya. Anyway another movie with a shot at blockbuster status but have a sneaking feeling the PC forces will halt that result, we'll sussed it over the next couple of months. What's Coming Up, if anythingTumbleweed time down the cineplex for horror fans yo!
