Australian Box Office - 19th January 2017
Leader of the Pack in 2017 Blockbusters in 2017: 2
You get the feeling Roadshow expected a lot from coming of age comedy The Edge Of Seventeen but seems a movie about one chick's relationship with Boys and her teacher really didn't gel with the target teen female audience. The movie made around $3 million over a surprisingly short two week run and was pretty much engulfed by an avalanche of releases on Boxing Day. Fingers crossed for Roadshow that disc sales and rentals are strong, as the box office result is pretty disappointing. First miss of 2017 folks, could be more to come of course but for the moment Roadshow will be grinding their teeth. Warner Bros served up a spin off to the Harry Potter fans and they turned up in droves to prove their favourite universe still has the magic. Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them rampaged in the top twenty for just over two months delivering $32.5 million. Guess we can expect a number of movies circling the Potter central premise in the years to come, strange mix of fantasy and by gone society, maybe points to sections of society not overly happy with the modern reality of Trumpism, Brexit, and a bunch of other disruptions. But hey lets not get too philosophical here, horror movie site folks, we tend to focus on the darker ways around here. Who would have thought a singing animated pig would have held down top spot on the chart for the first two weeks of the year! Sing may have fallen back -31% over weekend three but the $2.3 million earnt was enough to keep top spot and push the movie above blockbuster status. Clearly Universal are doing something right and keeping Disney at bay while doing so. However with school holidays running out some dramatic falls might be in order for the movie over the coming weeks. Say an Aussie movie opening in top spot, Lion stormed to the top of the charts on the back of about every media agency in the Country pushing the hell out of it and trying to promote the heck out of Nicole Kidman, getting a win here after a whole bunch of misses. The movie averaged $16,525 over 254 screens for a bow of $4.2 million. We wait to see the critical reaction on this one, but guess it won't matter as regardless of quality the locals will push the funk out of the movie and claim our Nic is the second coming of Grace Kelly. Naturally the PC crew will lap it up as well cause hey minorities are the new black, no offence intended friends and neighbours. Opening in second spot Bogan fantastic actioner XXX 4: The Return Of Xander Cage averaged $8,971 over 331 screens delivering a bow of $3 million for distributor Paramount. That isn't strong enough to breach breakout hit status, so we are looking at a movie that probably will deliver a meh result and disappear from the collective memory of patrons within a few weeks. As they tend to say a lot of movies get dumped over the first two months of the year, get ready for a whole bunch more similar results. Dropping to third spot Sing wasn't exactly chart topping as it dropped -30% over weekend four. The $1.6 million result still shows strong support for Sing in its continued dogfight with Disney's Moana, both movies now showing signs of being able to breach $30 million. What's Coming Up, if anything
And the horror franchise is out of the blocks in 2017! Leading off Resident Evil: The Final Chapter see's Alice going back to where it all started, while battling zombies, nasties etc in a last attempt to save the human race from extinction. I'm expecting around $1.5 million over next weekend, have a feeling the faithful will front up for what could be the last entry in a franchise that has never really lifted off in a meaningful fashion. In dude course we'll do a retro of the enture franchise, while the Wolf keeps us gainfully up to date with the games that kicked things off. Fingers crossed we get something over $4 million in final earnings. The dark horse could of course be Split, M. Night's latest full frontal assualt on the dark genre. Revolves around a dude with multiple personality disorders who abducts three young ladies for neferious purposes. The Director got a lot of support for his last outing, The Visit, which should hold up for Split. Out on a limb here, $2.5 million opening weekend for a solid $6.5 million final tally. Go you good thing!
