Split  Resident Evil 6: The Final Chapter

So it seems Boredwood can't get enough of the Kennedy clan, this time turning their attention to Jackie Kennedy. Aussie punters were somewhat less inclined to join the Camelot merriment with the movie returning $2 million for distributor Entertainment One. Without a real hook to drag people in there was no reason to see this one, besides which maybe punters are getting bored with the same story being told over and over again. Limp Oscar bait, moving on. SciFi stalker tale Passengers managed to make a solid enough $14.5 million, but I'm not about to dial into the rather sordid morality that the Studio pumps out. If all involved in this one can't see the moral bankrupt nature of the plot, then they collectively need a smack in the mouth to be honest. Boredwood at it's ironic low point for mine. Live By Night, gangsters facing off against the KKK in Florida during the prohibition era, who thinks this shite up, oh wait Ben Asslick, all is explained. Hey a romance for the Ladies, Allied even has Brad Pitt at his smouldering best, dig on in there ladies, you deserve it.

There's a general theory in film circles that Aussie pundits will invariably turn up in droves to really bad movies and this proved the case over the weekend with soft core chick flick Fifty Shades Darker taking out top spot. The movie averaged a solid enough $10,073 over 612 screens for a bof of $6.2 million. Clearly distributor Universal will be aiming for a blockbuster at the end of the movie's run, but really given how utterly inept this one is the current gross is way above the merits of what is happening on screen. Unfortunately Female movie goers seem to support truly shitty flicks, evidence Twilight, so hold on to your knickers while I death ride the flick all the way to the finish line.

Dropping to second spot over weekend four Lion still managed a solid -20% hold adding $2.45 million in the proess to the running total that is now approaching blockbuster status. Clearly this is going to be the big local movie of the year but still not convinced folks, as normal the publicity industry is pumping this one for all they are worth regardless of the actual merit of the movie. On the bright side the local brainwashing platoons had little impact on Oscar night with zero nominations, much to the shrill hysteria of some local individuals. Split continues to prove there are a whole bunch of M. Night supporters regardless of the best efforts of the haters to bury the Director. Over weekend three the movie held at -30% earning $1.6 million and in the process pushing total gross to north of $9.5 million, so clearly we are signing off on a breakout hit. While Split isn't going to be M. Night's biggest hit Downunder it's certainly improving his horror street cred.

Weekend three for Resident Evil: The Final Chapter saw the movie hold -49%, which is solid enough given just about everything was front end load for the zombie flick. The weekend earn was $288k which pushed total gross to $2.8 million and does give some hope of the movie breaching the $3 million barrier. Pretty good result considering by now the franchise is down to those who are determined to see it through to the end.

What's Coming Up, if anything

The Great Wall

Not entirely sure if this one counts as horror but The Great Wall has monsters and is opening wide this coming weekend. A couple of European mercenaries searching for the elusive gun powder get roped into defending the Great Wall of China from a horde of monsters. Simple enough story line one would have thought but naturally the PC crowd are up in arms over one of the lead actors being white!?! Say what, were they meant to cast Chinese Europeans!?! Welcome to the modern PC Boredwood where they can be as racist, sexist, and demeaning as they like, and then throw the toys out of the pram when someone does something to upset their sensibilities. Clearly the concept of irony isn't strong in Tinsel town. Anyways The Great Wall should rock around $5 million, any less and it'll be something of a car wreck.
