Talk us through it

Lafayette continues his ordeal in the basement of Fangtasia but devises an escape plan that involves perhaps the most over the top scene yet in the series, doesn't help and he really didn't want to meet Pam. Meanwhile Sookie and Bill are having make-up sex, which they are going to need a lot of after Sookie takes Jessica to visit her family, bit of a house cleaning project there for Bill.

Jason Stackhouse, once again proving he doesn't look before he leaps, has arrived at the Light of Day Leadership Conference. While our boy is getting notice, I'm not entirely sure that Sarah Newlin is eyeing up Jason with purely Christian thoughts, the little tramp. And in case we don't have enough going on Maryann, she used to have a thing with Sam, arrives at Merlottes and proceeds to do the menu and get the local barflies all hot and bothered over the music. I'm telling you possession going down here, given those black eyes, where are the Winchester Bros when you need them!

Holy cow lets crack a bottle of trublood and get through this episode.

Review

“But I swear it was like it wasn't even me doing it. It must be all those new vampire impulse control issues.” - Jessica

I'm starting to think there's some real clever writing going down in True Blood. There's all these subtle twists and turns coming at us in a sort of sly "now you see it now you don't" theme kind of a way. Yes I know I might be reading slightly too much into what after all is simply a Vampire show but every now and again you see an episode with a sub plot and the whole idea of themes and stuff looking right back at you. For example in Keep This Party Going there's a contrast between Jason Stackhouse and Jessica Hamby. Jason has given up his wants and desires, for how long, to pursue a religious path. Naturally Jason is going in the wrong direction. Jessica, who is from a button down WASP religious past, has decided to let her inner beast have full frontal control. Neither character is making the correct decision, but then neither is really batting off a well rounded personality. Just think if Jason and Jessica got together, mayhem and destruction I tells ya.

Well okay that's enough of the deep and philosophical let's move it along here kids. Another episode and another jammed packed exploration of all things Bon Temps. True Blood never ceases to amaze me with how much can be put into a single fifty odd minute episode. We have plot arcs running wild, new characters constantly popping up, and previous season plot developments still coming home to roost. I'm not entirely sure any other show could cope with the overloading going down here, but I'm also starting to think that for newbies to the series it's not going to be a happy relationship. For sure if you are not versed in events in season one you might find yourself somewhat lost in the machinations going down here early in season two. Clearly True Blood has a dedicated fanbase, and unfortunately if you want to get on board the groove train here you are going to have to invest in both seasons and start from ground zero. Hint, vampires and changelings have come to Bon Temps, slide into some goodness yo.

The central premise of last session was a serial killer terrorising the young ladies of our favourite Southern town, or at least those who had been intimate with fangers. Looks like season two is either going to focus on Maryann's particularly bizarre world view or maybe Jason's friends in the religious right camp, all out war on the cards there with the Vampire nation. This follows traditions setup by shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer where there is a single antagonistic source each season that varies from season to season allowing for things to remain fresh rather than coagulating. Actually Dexter goes down a similar path for those with a more serial killer disposition. Regardless of antagonist, and neither Maryann or the Church of the Sun have the best planned for the denizens of Bon Temps, it's great to see a change of pace allowing True Blood to expand it's mythology and keep things boiling away.

Can season two build on the share intensity of each episode from the first seaso. Judging from the first couple of excursions back to Bon Temos that would be a big hell yeah!

Not surprisingly the episode keeps the humour going, one of the fundamental aspects of True Blood, this time courtesy of the overly vicious vampire Eric Northman and his sidekick Pam. While torturing the hell out of various prisoners Eric is also concerned that he may have ended up with blood in his hair, which will naturally upset in-house hair dresser Pam. “This is a disaster. We'll have to go much shorter then I planned”.

For those trying to keep up with the intricacies of the show Eric also reveals that Sookie is central to his plans and of quite some value. There was a hint of this in season one but here in season two it's become a more prominent plot point. What the hair challenged Eric might be planning is left up in the air at this stage.

Also coming to the fore in Keep This Party Going is that Eric expects Sookie's help in uncovering all manner of things, and the disappearance of a vampire sheriff from Texas named Godric. Guess Sookie, Bill, and entourage, will be headed to the lone star state then.

Kristin Bauer plays the world weary Pam, Eric Northman's 2IC at Fangtasia. While only having a minor role thus far over the first couple of seasons Ms Bauer is rapidly developing her own fan base and remains a highlight when ever she appears. We expect a one liner from Pam, and Bauer shows excellent comic timing on hitting that every single time.

Viewers be warned some extreme gore going down in one scene early in the episode, it's actually quite nasty to be honest.

Summary Execution

Well I had a total blast with Keep This Party Going and am firmly back in True Blood mode friends and neighbours. As ever the episode was full to the brim with ideas, kept me entertained with the various shenanigans going down, and I can't wait to discover in what direction some of the plot arcs are going to take us in season two. Guess I better keep working on the episode guide then. One of the best ever episodes in my sometimes sober opinion.

Had a quick check on the net to see what sites were throwing us titbits and details about True Blood, (screen caps, music lists, episode guides, etc), and surprisingly there's not a lot happening on the Bon Temps pavement. Strange really given the multitude of places covering Supernatural for example. Worth checking out is true-blood.net who are pretty comprehensive, most of the other so called “fansites” are simply trying to sell you merchandise or are ego powered exercises. The net never ceases to amaze in how venal it can get with people cashing in left, right, and freaking centre.

Okay so I'm giving up recommending this one, you are either one of the enlightened and already watching the show or you are in serious need of some life injection.
