Leader of the Pack in 2017 Blockbusters in 2017: 15
The latest Reese Witherspoon comedy Home Again failed to achieve anything much for distributor E1 making $1.6 million over a three week run. Unfortunately having a big name Oscar winner headlining didn't do much to increase the likelyhood of success. Can't see this one scoring much in terms of disc sales but perhaps some relief is available via the pay TV channels. Reese wasn't the only big named star not exactly knocking things over, Michael Fassbender's The Snowman could only manage $1.6 million as well, which was a surprised result to be honest. Guess if Hannibal isn't in it selling a psycho movie is going to be a job of work. Think we already covered Kingsman: The Golden Circle but for the record the movie topped $19 million in its second coming. In what was something of a massacre over the weekend Victoria and Abdul finally fell after a two week royal command tour, the flick made $8.5 million from the retiree demographics and that was about all she wrote. After a rocky start The Emoji Movie finally gained some traction as the easily convinced rushed the cinema cause the advertising told them to do it. This won scored a 9% on the RT meter but still managed to make $14 million at the Aussie box office, remember local punters will turn up to watch any old crap if marketed right, talk about your brain dead masses. And finally Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie had a second run at things making a final total of $9.6 million. Surprisingly Murder on the Orient Express (2017) defined expectations exploding onto the chart in top spot on the back of massive support from the geriatic hordes. The movie opened on 333 screens, distributor Fox showing belief there, and averaged a thrilling $11,565 for a bow of $3.85 million. With nearly $4 million already in the bank I'm signing off a breakout hit here but for sure am not calling blockbuster. There's a fair amount of front end load happening, but not enough to stop this run away train from breaching $10 million in due course. About the only thing that could throw something on the tracks from here is the industry panicing over a reduced second weekend or word of mouth being horrible. On weekend three Thor: Ragnarok still managed to bring in a solid $3.8 million on the back of a 42% contraction. Total earn now stands at $26.5 million, which pretty much ensures a result post $30 million later in the month. Not sure this one has the legs to threaten top spot for the year, but still great result for the superhero genre. In third spot A Bad Moms Christmas dropped 38%, earnt $1.75 million, and is hovering around $6.4 total gross. Enough said about this movie. Not the best weekend for the dark genre at the box office, things were dropped like discs at Xmas time, oh come on fair enough statement given we're within spitting distance of December. Jigsaw had what formly would be called a standard horror drop of -50.8%. Given more modern holds, that's perhaps pointing to gorenography only working be the hardcode audience and the bogan element. Still $1,95 million in the bank, Studio Canal will be reasonably pleased with the state of play after two weekends. Geostorm compressed by -67.1% over weekend four but did earn enough to push past the $3 million barrier. Clearly the movie is in the suck and there's not going to be a huge amount of additional coin from here. Happy Death Day is in a similar position with a -69.7% contraction on weekend five earning a tad under $40k and popping total gross to a solid $3.45 million. And finally Greg McLean's Jungle was only a couple of thousand off the top twenty pace earning $25,199 on opening weekend. Okay that was a tad below my call of $100k but hey I wasn't expecting the Harry Potter fans to turn up.
Yorgos Lanthimos's followup to The Lobster, The Killing of a Sacred Deer promises some dark delights for psychological horror fans. Okay that's all and good, pointing to a decent total, but unfortunately Nic Kidman is starring which pretty much guarantees a disaster of epic porportions. Think this one might scoot around the $120k mark.
