Just when we thought things might be trending upwards the overnight viewing figures for episode five of 2.12 million indicates things aren’t improving as the shills are claiming. Clearly there was a blimp on the radar last go around, and things are returning to normal as the audience continues to contract at an alarming rate. Naturally the apologists are all giddy about the episode as they wet themselves on what a great social commentary we are getting with Dot and Bubble, clearly not getting the irony involved here. Yes, this is indeed social commentary, about how Davis and his so called supporters live in a bubble with apparently no understanding of real life. Just like the characters in the episode, the zoomers supporting this shite are bubble wrapped with a warped view of how society actually operates. Let’s get into it as the shock ending was broadcast in capital letters to anyone who doesn’t need themes spoon feed to them.
Welcome to the city of Finetime, where apparently the only inhabitants are youthful white people of the generic kind. The inhabitants live on social networks and have to be informed on how to walk or do anything we would take for granted. For example, need to do a poo, well your social media guide will directly you to the bathroom and tell you what to do to achieve that. Anyways Lindy Pepper-Bean is a twenty something who is about as vapid as the average Who apologist, she is doing it tough, having to work two whole hours per day, and isn’t picking up on the increasing number of her cyber airheads that are going off line. Thankfully the Doctor and Ruby have worked out how to breach the local social network and are trying to warn people that things are a whole lot worse than it appears in Barbie land. Seems there are giant slug like things, having a high old time feasting on the inhabitants of Finetime, are they this episode’s heroes? Lindy is forced to wake up and smell the coffee, something supporters of this series haven’t done yet, and with a bit of help from a middle aged looking Ricky September manages to make it to an escape area where she thumbs her nose at the Doctor because of reasons.
The central theme to this episode is of course racism, because we can’t possibly have an episode that doesn’t delve into politics. Apparently a few people may not have notice everyone on the social media platform are generic white. I was left pondering where this might be going, should have realise Davis would go for the obvious statement at some stage of the series, but to be honest I didn’t even think someone as crap at scripting as Davis would pick this low hanging fruit. Folks we are talking about one of the laziest racist statements yet to be made, face palming is the activity of the day while viewing this bollock.
Besides a lazy race twist, which could only come from the BBC, we have a central character that the viewer is going to hate from the first minute she appears on screen. Talk about vapid and self centered, she defines the concept of a blonde airhead. Did you notice all the white people she talks to on social media while she is supposedly working? Just making sure you don’t miss one of the hints, yes I’m laughing my arse off, that Davis sends our way. Anyways the most boring irritating chick on the planet has to get us through the episode, it really doesn’t work, I didn’t like her from about minute one so had no concerns about her being eaten alive by the slug monsters, it would have improved the episode to be honest.
Naturally the Doctor and Ruby have to try and break through the social media miasma the inhabitants live in. Unfortunately, they come across as patronising and are talking down to people. Hey reflecting the modern BBC, who have no understanding of the term “irony” apparently. The average viewer isn’t going to get through this episode, every single character deserved to be eaten by the slugs. Davis clearly has lost all idea of how fiction works, you need a sympathetic character the audience cares about put into danger, else the body of work you are putting forward has no resonance with the intended audience. Oops forgot Davis is writing this shite for an audience that aren’t actually going to watch it, they are too busy whinging about whatever the fashionable whinge is currently.
Sorry am going to get over the whole racism thing Davis is hammering shortly, but if the writer is going to belabour the theme then let’s really investigate how out of touch he is. At one stage Davis has Lindy say, “you all look the same to me”! Hey Rusty the 1960s called, they want their themes back mate, society has move along from the days when Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner was shocking to the establishment as it held a mirror up to their outlook. But, hey let’s not keep with the times Davis, when you can have your supporters wetting themselves over your social awareness.
Oh and Susan Twist makes an appearance as Lindy’s mother, in a message from the Home World. Cearly that planet tried to jettison their zoomers in an unsuccessful attempt to improve their society. Appears the slug monsters finished off the Home World inhabitants and are rocking in Finetime for dessert. Davis was probably trying to make a point with this, but you know, was checking my phone rather than being immersed in the theme Davis was trying to sledgehammer through my television screen.
Just when I thought we might have got through an episode without Davis's retarded view on society norms we get a couple of scenes that show he is like a dog with a bone when it comes to those norms. Rickey September guides Lindy past four space slugs, hey babes calling them that late in the review, and they fall into each other’s arms. Apparently they should have both got mutual consent before this happened, presumably in triplicate with notary signatures, as you know spontaneity isn’t something zoomers appreciate. On the bright side the human race is going to die out if this is the future, we won’t need space slugs. Message in a bottle to Davis, this isn’t how things operate in the real world outside your social feeds and the BBC canteen.
The other issue Davis seems to be labouring with is originality. Toward the end of the episode, Lindy has to do battle with her “dot”, keep your mind out of the gutter folks. The device that generates her social media, it's a small ball that can zoom around like gravity isn’t a proven concept. Anyways while the ball is trying to do what the audience have wanted to do to Lindy since the first couple of minutes of the episode, feed her to the slugs, I was reminded of Star Wars and Phantasm, both of which having menacing silver balls, but there you have it, nothing new over at the BBC.
Naturally those still defending the show, and you’ll notice the access media are gradually waking up to the truth and are abandoning their shill stance, seem to think the episode has clever writing with people rushing to explain all the clues that Lindy might not like black people. No shite Sherlock, think we might have picked up on that without your inane input. Once again, you need to spoon feed people who didn’t see the ending dive bombing the lifeboats well in advance. It’s like the mentally challenged leading the zoomer social media sheep!
Oh for god’s sake, can this series dig any deeper into the swamp of ineptitude. It doesn’t respect the audience, has exceedingly poor writing, and doesn’t begin to deliver on any likeable characters. Yet the shills are still out there, defending their little hearts out as the audience viewer numbers plummet to new levels of disaster. The average person knows this series is complete crap, pandering to a minority who apparently can’t think for themselves and who are driven by the latest social media outrages, and are finding other avenues for their entertainment. No recommendation, this episode is for the brain dead, who don’t seem to know it is simply reflexing their own shallow expectations back to them. The title, Dot and Bubble probably had to be explained to viewers who think this is top Whovian fare.
