First trailer drops for Alien: Earth

Seems like Disney+ are playing this one right, anticipation is being built, details are being released slowly, and the narrative is getting more complex as new details emerge. The problem of course is that a solid build up can lead to huge disappointment when the final product drops. Fingers crossed, at the moment anticipation is high and the first trailer to drop is looking better than one could reasonably expect. Let’s break down the trailer, which is included below. And we'll avoid the stupid a lot of channels are doing in order to generate views.

We get some location establishment, we are on Neverland Research Island Earth, and the year is 2120. Two full years before the doomed voyage of the Nostromo and proof that Weyland-Yutani at least knew about the Xenomorph prior to LV-426 (Acheron) supposed discovery by the crew of the Nostromo in Alien.

We get a view of a honking big scorpion behind glass, which I guess is some sort of plot foreshadowing of the Xenomorph that is clearly going to appear later in the first season. Is that a hint of Predator clicking in the background as we are introduced to Wendy, a young terminally ill patient who is about to have her consciousness transferred into a new synthetic body, because she is special.

Prodigy City, is this on Neverland Island, and a downed spacecraft crash lands in the City precincts. Boy Kavalier, the CEO of The Prodigy Corporation – a rival to Weyland-Yutani, wants what is on board the doomed vessel that we learn is a research vessel called the USCSS Maginot. Wendy and a group of other synthetics/hybrids/humans offer to go get whatever it is that the Maginot has returned from deep space with. Again the Predator clicking noise, this is either a red herring or one of the species on board the Maginot is a Yautja.

A survivor of the Maginot can tell the audience that the ship collected five species from the darkest corners of the Universe. Somehow this cuts to someone having done a carbon drawing of what looks like a Xeno, or at least something monster like, which may point to the psychic connection some humans have with the Xenomorph Queen, as depicted in the Dark Horse Comic Aliens: Earth War .

We then get a nifty montage that hints at what the five species might be, including ovamorphs – I think, another Egg type, an invasion mind control tentacle monstrosity, and others. Naturally the Xenomorph takes pride of place, and did I see Wendy dragging one round by a hook through it’s inner jaw? And we finally get a release date, August 12th.

Naturally there’s a lot of speculation about what we are shown including it somehow relates to the Engineers and the black pathogen – where is this exactly shown? Wasn’t in the trailer I viewed. And of course the captured Xenomorph eggs being from David’s cache as depicting in Alien: Covenant, and the other four species came from? Some people should learn to shut the frack up, stop trawling for views, and stop getting it wrong time and time again.
