Wobbling, but can it hold on for a breakout status   Slightly underperforming, but solid horror result

Icon had something of a miss with Edge of Darkness, the Clint Eastwood vehicle didn't catch on with punters possibly due to the title being confused with a possible horror outing. A better result would have been expected but even Icon couldn't get anything much happening with it. Pity as Eastwood movies are generally good value. Daybreakers dropped out of the top twenty after a very impressive four week run for a local horror flick. $2.5 million would seem to be about the final result which is over all an excellent outcome and gives heart to those Distributors going with local product this year.

ScaryMinds score in '10

0 for 4 - No change from last week, The Collector didn't happen at our cinemas, in the wash up that's probably the correct decision.

Tim Burton's latest excursion into the gothic, Alice In Wonderland, went wide with 448 locations and was extremely strong with a $23,163 average. The opening weekend gross of $10.3 million is clearly on blockbuster pace and I wouldn't be suprised with a $30 million final result. The Blind Side dipped -33% over weekend two and with some Oscar buzz might just reach breakout status, though Oscar doesn't necessarily influence the Down Under box office for the average movie. Opening in third spot Dear John was solid but doesn't look likely to really make an impression in the wash up.

Shutter Island was down -41% over weekend three but looks like it could have enough firepower to breach $10 million in the coming weeks. Clearly the next Twitard movie is going to win the year but anything over $10 million is going to be right to the top of the horror box office chart for 2010. Conversely Universal must be slightly disappointed with The Wolfman over weekend four with a -63% collapse after three solid weeks. The result is still going to be excellent for a horror film in this country but not quite hat the opening weeks were leading us to believe. Some questioning over the overly poor CGI in use may have impacted.

What's Coming Up, if anything

Ready for the first horror flop of the year?

Coming pretty much out of the blue Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant, to give it the full title, is another vamp movie aimed at teen chicks with limited cinematic appreciation. This one sees some plastic fantastic from Boredwood re-igniting the feud between two vampire fraction and goes all sparkly in the process. Not expecting anything from this journey into the inane, dropping $250k on it.
