IT (2017)  mother!

This past weekend saw a hell of a lot of movies disappearing from the top twenty as a changing of the guard went down. Chief victim was Annabelle: Creation, the latest movie in The Conjuring universe. Creation had a five week run, finally disappearing with $7.1 million onboard and helping to create a great 2017 at the box office for the dark genre. Madman continued the mining of anime with a collection titled Celebrate Studio Gibili which managed a three week run earning a solid $675K. Good news for the Distributor there, and hey when's the latest Death Note live action movie dropping on disc? Stephen King fantasy adaptation The Dark Tower was highly anticipated and expected to do some serious box office damage but poor reviews and mixed viewer reactions in North America had Sony scrambling for a new release strategy Downunder. The movie managed a four week run but topped out at $3.2 million, a hell of a lot less than was expected beginning of year. Just goes to show that not everything based on King works is going to be successful. Roadshow hit out with The Big Sick which only managed $3.9 million over a six week run, clearly the racial aspects of the movie appealed to the PC set, but no one else was remotely interested. After am impressive seven week run War for the Planet of the Apes dropped out of the chart with a commendable $10.4 million to its credit. That should be enough to ensure if another movie in the franchise gets made it will have a cinema release in Australia. Not sure if we haven't covered this before but anyways Despicable Me 3 finished up a mighty 13 week run with $33 million, huge success there for UPI.

For a second weekend It held onto top spot with a -33.6% percent hold. Pennywise and the Losers Club racked in $5 million, bringing total gross to an outstanding $14.7 million and top spot on the dark genre charts for the year. With very little large scale dark genre movies left to come out in 2017 we pretty much have our top grosser of the year. Lock and load it, and I'm holding tight to this one screaming into blockbuster status over the next couple of weekends.

In a clear indication Aussie punters will watch the most inane crap possible The Emoji Movie took out second spot with a surge in support from last weekend. The movie made slightly north of $2 million, bringing total gross to $2.3 million. Australia collectively give yourself an upper cut, seriously what is wrong with you people! In third spot the retiree community got Victoria and Abdul, which bowed to $1.9 million which given no preview screenings is pretty much the total gross to date. No interest over here in another period drama, but at least it will keep the walker frame set off the streets.

mother! opened Downunder on the back of solid reviews from up North, and exceeded my expectation of $600k. The movie opened on 260 screens averaging a reasonable $2,681 for a bow of $607K. With the total gross already post $700K my initial assumption of a total gross of $1.4 or so is still in play. PPI may be simply trying to get the name of the movie out there for disc sales but if they don't blink the cinema totals will be solid.

What's Coming Up, if anything

Tokyo Ghoul

Madman are hitting out with the live action flick Tokyo Ghoul based off the hugely successful anime series of the same name. Yu Aoi, a Tokyo college student, is attacked by a ghoul, sort of a superpowered human who has a hunger for human flesh. Surprsingly Yu survives but is now part ghoul and on the run. Clearly the movie is going to get a low screen count, Madman are experts at advertising, but should earn around $47K and get the name into the public sphere.
