Australian Box Office - 17th August 2017
Leader of the Pack in 2017 Blockbusters in 2017: 14
You know at some stage aging Actors really have to give the game away gracefully rather than going down in a blaze of subpar movies, witness Paris Can Wait. Diane Lane, who?, and Alex Baldwin headline this rom-com with a touch of drama, but are like watching your grandparents doing the deal, and honestly who wants to watch that. Apparently not Aussie punters who dropped $1.5 million on this one over four weeks, that's cinema oblivion right there kids. And the only other movie of note dropping out of the top twenty over the weekend was The Little Mermaid, Disney trying to earn extra coin there with the exact same movie from a by gone age, thankfully even the sandpit crew are getting wise to this sort of marketing tool now with a modest $74k earnt in a single week, suck it up House of Mouse. Holding down top spot for the second weekend in row Annabelle: Creation made a -33% hold over weekend two confirming word of mouth, or at least advertising, is strictly solid for this possessed doll flick. And additional $1.5 million was added to the gross which now stands around the $4.6 million mark. Besides a horror movie scoring up the top spot for two weekends, the result is going to be pretty solid for the genre in 2017. With another good hold next weekend we could really see something special from Creation, though I'm pretty sure even at this early stage that the movie isn't going to make breakout hit status. So something around the $8 million mark perhaps. One of the movies we were going to have difficulty with this year due to it being a fantasy flick rather than a horror outing was The Dark Tower, the long anticipated feature based on the series of Stephen King novels. Okay King is a horror heavy hitter, but Dark Tower is a journey beyond the realms of horror ergo why we aren't covering it overly. Anyways the movie hasn't exactly scored with Critics, 16% RT score folks, and the North American results see the movie in a whole bunch of trouble. Downunder the movie opened to $1.4 million, which indicates it is going to bomb outright, the finish could be a disaster if word of mouth proves to be bad. I can see this one dropping below $3 million outright, ouch for Sony. Hey in better news Dunkirk finally hit blockbuster status over weekend five, underlying a great movie by Nolan. Guess this one is going to start to wind down shortly so best get a viewing on the big screen, nah, if the Cinemas aren't going to bother doing anything about arseholes and their mobile freaking phones then I'm not going to drop coin on them. That would be my rant for this weekend folks. War for the Planet of the Apes continues to gallop along, no haven't seen the movie - see comments about mobile phones above, making $541k over weekend four on the back of a -48.7% drop. The total gross now stands at $9.7 million which pretty much ensures War will hit breakout hit status. For those interested the results Downunder are tracking badly against the North American results. Surprisingly BOG don't have the international results for the movie yet, Gitesh Pandya falling asleep at the wheel there. What's Coming Up, if anything
Chicks in peril flick 47 Meters Down hits cinemas Thursday with an aim to keeping the public scared of sharks. Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water etc. Two sisters take a cage diving excursion to get up and close with great whites in Mexico, unfort local safety standards aren't up to spec and the chain holding the cage breaks plunging the gals 47 meters down. Can they get back to the surface before their air runs out, and while doing so can they avoid some nasty denizens of the deep blue? Hey catch a screening, we got the chance to preview this one and it rocks. Expecting distributor Vendetta to go with a low release campaign, so inking in around $170k on opening weekend, for a $450k total. For sure am going to drop some coin on this one when the disc hits shelves later in the year.
